Step Parent Adoption, NC Family Law

If you are considering adopting a stepson or stepdaughter, congratulations! Before we can embark on this new chapter, there are a few things that must happen first. For example, if a husband is trying to adopt his wife's children from a previous relationship, we first must terminate the parental rights of the biological father. In many cases, the biological parent will waive those rights. If the biological parent contests the termination of parental rights, we must then proceed with a hearing on the termination and subsequent adoption proceedings.

If you are considering adoption, please contact Rutherford Robertson, P.A. and allow us to assist you in this exciting adventure.

Before the stepparent may adopt, the rights of the other biological parent must be terminated if he or she will not consent to the adoption. Do you know where the other biological parent is? If not, Rutherford Robertson, can assist in locating the other parent, either personally or by publication in a newspaper that is distributed in that parent's last known city. Depending on how long you have been married to your current spouse, you may be required to have a home study completed. Contact Rutherford Robertson, P.A. to start the necessary paperwork.
